2012 BMW M3 Coupe

414 hp V8 engine
This Formula 1™-inspired powerplant is a driving enthusiast's dream. An M3 first, this powerful 4.0 liter V-8 engine delivers a dynamic 414-hp output and 295 ft-lb of available torque, as well as a maximum engine speed of 8400 rpm. All this power catapults the M3 from 0-60 in just 4.8 exhilarating seconds.* The engine sports BMW's Double-VANOS technology which ensures pinpoint-accurate valve timing. This allows for optimal combustion at every rev range while lowering emissions. Eight separate throttle butterflies operate precisely and independently for amazingly quick throttle response. All this combines to deliver smooth power throughout the rev range and breathtaking acceleration when requested.

Dual Clutch Transmission
Double Clutch Gearbox (DKG) is a 7-speed transmission using two independently operating clutches (but no clutch pedal). These control the odd and even gears so power can flow uninterrupted from the longitudinally-mounted engine to the transmission. The result is seamless up- and downshifts and better acceleration. Shifting can be done with a center console mounted gear shifter or with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters.

M Drive
An optional feature that offers a comprehensive array of choices when it comes to personalizing your M3 driving feel. Normally, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) helps to deliver optimal traction; but with M drive, DSC can also be set to track oriented M Dynamic Mode (MDM), which allows for more wheel slip and yaw angle. Optional Electronic Damping Control (EDC) can be set to comfort, normal or sport, depending upon your preferred handling settings and the surface of the road. Also engine response can be tweaked via a button in the center console which calls up normal, sport or sport plus programs.

All-Season Traction - Variable M Differential Lock
All-Season Traction, part of Dynamic Stability Control, provides better stability and control in slippery road conditions, while the Variable M Differential Lock delivers more traction and power coming out of turns.

Electronic Damping Control
Electronic Damping Control (EDC) automatically adjusts the shock absorber settings to meet changes in vehicle speed, load, or road and driving conditions. The driver selects either "Sport" or "Comfort" from the iDrive "Settings" menu. EDC then modifies the shock absorbers to any degree, from the softest to the firmest setting. The result is exceptional riding comfort and fluid, responsive handling at all times. For example, the "Sport" setting increases firmness under all conditions for a sportier driving feel. With the "Comfort" setting, when sensors detect smooth roads, the shock absorbers are kept "soft" for optimum riding comfort. When the vehicle is rounding a sharp corner or curve, the shock absorbers are automatically and instantly adjusted to a firmer level. And when the vehicle encounters irregular road surfaces, such as bumps or a "washboard" surface, the shocks are instantly adjusted to the optimum level of firmness. This controls ride motions, helping to keep ride comfort at an acceptable level while maintaining road contact.
